“Lone Star” and “Laundry and Bourbon” by James McLure
Two of the most hilarious one-act plays ever written conspire to depict the intermingled lives of six of the most colorful characters ever to find themselves trapped in the small-town life of a dry Texas town.
In “Laundry and Bourbon,” Elizabeth waits for her husband, Roy, to appear over the hill in his 1959 pink Thunderbird, back from a hitch in Vietnam. Whiling away a hot summer afternoon with her best friend, Hattie, and the self-righteous Amy Lee…folding laundry…sipping bourbon and Coke…dissing each other in uproarious fashion as the day wears on…Elizabeth comes to terms with the turmoil of her marriage. Roy may be wild, but he needs her, and she’ll be waiting for him when he comes home—no matter what others may say or think.
In “Lone Star,” Roy, a brawny, macho type who had once been a local high-school hero, is back in town from Vietnam and re-staking his claim to the three things he cherished most: his country, his sexy young wife, Elizabeth, and his beloved 1959 pink Thunderbird. First stop—his favorite old back-country bar. Joined by his dim-witted brother, Ray who worships him, and Cletis, Amy Lee’s fatuous new husband, the underpinnings of Roy's world begin to collapse in a series of sidesplittingly comical events before he even makes it home.
"LONE STAR is an uproarious comedy about two bawdily rambunctious Texas brothers peppered with the playwright's own special brand of cascading, spontaneous wit." —NY Times.
“Lone Star” is Shawnee Little Theatre’s entrance this July in the Oklahoma Community Theatre Association’s festival of plays.
